I believe things will change drastically with in one week. We have an extended warming period coming with temperature above 50 at night. We need sunshine.

Re: Ohio Morel Season 2014 16 Apr 2014 13:10 #21484

I hear that! It was in the upper teens last night (Mahoning Cty, NE Ohio) last night, and supposed to hit the mid 20's tonight! Yes, we need some sun and warmth. There's very little green in the woods. No sign yet of May Apples or Trillium. Very few wildflowers at all. This Winter was a bear! But, we're over the hump, I think, and I have a sever itch to get out. I'm a newb who found his very first morels just last Spring, so I can't wait to go hunting!

Re: Ohio Morel Season 2014 18 Apr 2014 01:14 #21516

Re: Ohio Morel Season 2014 18 Apr 2014 07:29 #21524

Went out last night to one of my spots from last year in the creek bottom , mayapple leaves are just starting to unfold there , may check som3 ridge tops this weekend, but still not much green in the woods here, probably the end of the month before full peak, what do you all think?

I've recently moved back to Cuyahoga Co., and am looking to connect with other morel hunters in this area. From previous message boards it seems this part if Ohio gets cooking around mid May? Is that anyone else's educated guess?

Re: Does anybody hunt in Cuyahoga County? 21 Apr 2014 13:34 #21604

I live in Cuyahoga county. Generally, you can see them coming up around the first week of May in most of Northeast Ohio. Obviously, there can be variations, but I usually find them around that first week of May.

Hello Everyone,
I found about 60 small greys today. I picked 39 of them, left the others for the next guy. Hated to pick them this size but it was just one of them situations. Please put Bluffton, OH on the map It is looking like a great year in the making in my opinion

Good find Jim. I'm surprised they are up already this far north. I don't usually start finding them until May in Stark county. Still a week or more away from venturing out but I may have to take a look sooner. I've found peak to be closer to mid-May here.

Thank You. The volume was what really got me. The way the dandelions started showing here about had me convinced some greys were out there somewhere. We had rain falling at 55 degrees the other night and I think that was the trigger. These are spot's I have picked from in the past couple years, they never produced this many before. I hope that is a indication of what is to come this year.

Good Luck to you this year!

Wow. Checked the map, and Bluffton isn't much further south than Mahoning County where I live. But it's funny how the weather works. We've been really cold here. It was your mention of dandelions that caught my attention. I was listening to a gardening show on the radio today when the host mentioned that we were at least 2 weeks behind a normal Spring. His comment was, "When can you remember not seeing any dandelions this late in April?" And he's right. There's not a single one in evidence around here! Lots of people talk about wisteria, lilacs, an dogwoods, but the lowly dandelion is a great indicator of when to get out there. I've been out a couple times already. Not really expecting to find anything, just wanted to see what's what. Still really sparse out there. Can't wait! And good luck everybody.

Hello, BB

Interesting. Do you watch the soil map on here? I totally believe what you've said. And as the map shows the soil temps are warmer here than they are where you are. It's been like that too. The dandelions are out like crazy now, and yet the lilacs have yet to bloom still. 104 mostly small greys/yellows picked(plenty left behind to grow) today by me and my dad. Dandelions are the best indicator here I believe.

Good Luck, it's coming to you soon!

33, yes it is weird. It was your mention of dandelions and the comment on the radio the helped me put 2 and 2 together. If the dandelions aren't popping then you know the soil is really cold. We had a decent rain and temps on Friday, but then a heavy frost last night! And we're supposed to be going into a rainy, cooler period this week. We need some decent temps over here.

Re: Ohio Morel Season 2014 28 Apr 2014 13:44 #21862

Nice Molly! It's amazing what a difference a few days can make. Had a chance to take a little walk today. May apples are popping up everywhere, the tallest being 6"or 7". Some small wildflowers in evidence, but no Trilliums yet, although I think I found the leaves of some popping up ahead of the flowers. And I actually saw my first dandelion of he season today! WOW! We're way behind schedule here, but I feel that we're starting to get close.

Re: Ohio Morel Season 2014 28 Apr 2014 13:49 #21863

Lots of dead and dying elms and we finally got rain with warmer temps. I think the rain helped.

Re: Ohio Morel Season 2014 28 Apr 2014 13:52 #21864

Thanks! Super excited! I think this season is behind too and was starting to get bummed out. This time last year we were finding big yellows. Our yard is full of dandelions , the lilac trees have leaves but no flowers and the may apples are decent size.

Nice find! Glad there are more finds in muskingum county. I found 2 greys on private property over the weekend by an ash tree in muskingum county. Hoping I can make it back this week. I was thinking about checking out Blue Rock state park too.

Did you find yours on public or private?

Found in Vinton Co. Ohio had a blast, mom and son outing. My son always takes me shroomin, it is a special thing we have done for years together. Plus getting to eat them after having a great time in the woods! I wouldn't take anything for my special time with my youngest son.

So tasty!
Strange how after the first one of the season, all my dreams of naked women turn to dreams of MORELS!!

Got a chance to go out for a quick look today. Went to a spot where I found them last year The ground was carpeted with 'shrooms. Just not morels! These were fairly small with a slender stem. The cap was from light brown to dark brown on top with the gills ranging from dark brown to nearly black on the larger specimens. Max height was 2" to 2 1/2". Anyone care to venture a guess as to what they were? I didn't have my camera. I'm guessing that once they go by the boards the morels could come on. I know it was a heck of a lot greener in there last year when I found them!

And also buckeye my guess without pics would be mica caps. Coprinellus micaceus. Thats the most common. Were they clustered around trees? If they were mica caps then they would have black gills. You can pick them and they will turn to goo in no time. Other guess would be Psyathrella. Its hard without proper pics.

Re: Ohio Morel Season 2014 03 May 2014 13:51 #22016

Yes. They were clustered around a dead elm where I found morels last year. They just carpeted the ground. They are a small mushroom with a very slender stalk, much smaller than a pencil, with a cap that ranges from the diameter of a nickel to a quarter. I found nothing taller than 2 1/2" TO 3", and the bigger they were the darker they were. Also, the gill color was always darker than than the top of the cap. If the top of the cap was light brown, the gills were dark brown. In the larger specimens the top of the cap was dark brown and the gills were nearly black.

I'm hoping once they fade, the morels will come on!

They're up in Henry County. I found about 20 greys & yellows along the south edge of a woods. They haven't started coming up inside the woods yet, but I think if we hit the seventies several days next week like they're predicting, they'll start to pop.

It's on the map, thanks.
It's bad luck to pick the first morel you find. Leave it there for me!

My haul for today 55 half frees on south facing slope forest full of tulip poplar. Look for springy ground and dead or living poplar trees. They seem to be hiding in jaggers a lot in these areas. I also found a cluster of three half frees, and a mutant one with two stipes. Good day for me.

Hello Everyone! Hope everyone is doing well. I've been real busy between working 45 hours a week and getting out to the woods and haven't had time to share many pictures. Here's a few from the past couple days. Tuesday I picked in Hardin County and Wednesday I picked in Allen County with my daughter that will be 2 this month Great times, I usually do the picking and hand them to her to put in the bag. We were in a pretty decent patch of 15 Yellows or so and I was picking where there were quite a few in a close area when I turned back to hand her a few Yellows for the bag she had her finger out pointing out a yellow I hadn't saw yet. Pretty proud moment, and of course she picked that morel! Good Luck everyone!

Picture 1&2 are from Tuesday, Pic 3 is from Wednesday.

Jim, that is awesome! Those kids have the sharp eyes, don't they? I talked to a 'shroomer at my hunting club, and he said he liked to bring his Son, 6 years old, out morel hunting with him. Said he's a lot closer to the ground and has eyes like an eagle!

I found these 2 morels today. Can anyone tell me if they are the safe kind? This is my first time to find any and I am just not positive about them. Thank you.

They look like grey Morels to me. Im no expert but Id say you found you some grey/blonde Morels! Nice finds! Im eating mine. To be sure you could do whats called a cross section. Take a non serrated knife and cut the mushrooms in half long ways. I did this on some of mine in the above posts. Also you can spore print them. Lay them on aluminum foil and place a glass over them. Takes a bit but they will drop spores. Most likely yellow to tan ones

Found 69 half frees and 5 blondes that I picked. Left most the small ones to grow. The tree pic is of a baby ash tree. Look for these and tulip polar. Ash are easy to tell by their opposite branching. They almost mirror their branches.

buckeyebowman-Thanks, I've really enjoyed it. Their eye sight is amazing!

cinnamon-Eat worry free and enjoy!

Today I picked about 70 Yellows, some getting pretty big. Some were in rough shape between the wind, heat the past couple days, and lack of rain. Some were amazingly fresh though. I really wish we would have received more rain yesterday, It's critical at this point. Found a lot of my morels on dead Ash in Allen County today

Re: Ohio Morel Season 2014 11 May 2014 12:43 #22164

Finally! Finally! Finally, I'm finding some! No big hauls, but 10 yesterday and a dozen today. Will post pics, but I can't find my old camera so I had to buy a new one. Haven't downloaded the pic software yet.

In a prior post I mentioned an elm where I had found morels last year that was loaded up with mica caps. Went back to that tree yesterday. The mica caps were gone, and there were the morels! 9 of the 10 I found were under that tree. Hmmm, a new item for the data bank. Went to check some other elms I know about and found them with mica caps. One had a dog pecker that looked perfect just sitting there, but it disintegrated the second I touched it. Hoping those may produce some morels soon.

All of Saturday's morels came from elms, and all of Sunday's morels came from under apple trees. Finds are very spotty. You can check tons of trees and find nothing. Check the next tree, and there they are! It's just nice to finally be finding some, and I am now officially addicted!

Just wondering is anyone finding anything in Sandusky County? I
have looked and looked and looked. I have only found 2. Maybe I am not looking in the right places. I sure would appreciate any help. I don't even want a lot, just a few would be great. Thanks for any help.

I found over 150 this weekend and today in Sandusky County. I think with the growth on the woods floor we might be coming to and end. But then today I found fresh grey’s and some half frees. This has been a strange growth season! Big yellows are up as well.

I agree, but then I'm a newb, so what do I know? As far as most folks I've talked to up here think, things are just getting started. Ran into a couple of other hunters at the club on Sunday. Everybody had found some, but nobody is really killing it. Not like the numbers I'm seeing from other parts of the state. Most spots I check have nothing, and then you hit a spot where you find a few.

It got a little warm yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, and in the 80's today but cloudy with some showers in the morning and afternoon. Nice! Things were starting to get a little dry out there. We're supposed to hit the 80's again Tuesday with more rain, and then highs in the 70's and lows in the 50's for Wed and Thurs. You can bet I'll be out there. I'm hoping we have at least one more flush coming.

Edit: I've only found a couple of peckers and they were shot. One looked perfect, but disintegrated the second I touched it. Found a big gang of Gyromitra under a dying tree, but no morels. Don't know the variety of the tree, except that it wasn't an elm. I need to learn to identify ash trees! Also found a bunch of Verpas under an apple tree. I thought they might be half-frees, and they were nice and firm. I carry an old Barlow pocket knife with me and cut the 'shrooms off at ground level. I cut the first one and looked at the bottom of the stem. Not hollow! I cut off a quarter inch section of the stem. Still not hollow! Kept slicing off quarter inch sections till I reached the cap. All full of stuff! Then, I realized that if you look at them closely, the cap of a Verpa really doesn't resemble that of a half-free. I don't know how the emergence of Verpas dovetails with that of morels, but I'm thinking that my be a place that merits another visit!

I have found oysters in stark Ohio. Meigs
And buckeyebowman Ash are easy the are few of the trees with opposite branching. I put a pic of a baby ash in a post earlier last week.
Ive been searching with chest high waders in and along creeks. Every forest and ditch from here to the next county and I have one south facing hill producing. Its either just begun or ending early.

I hope it's just beginning, but somehow I feel that's not the case. Was a little warm the past couple of days, but we've had some rain, supposed to be more rain tonight, and then a little cooling trend. I'll be out tomoorow afternoon if I can! Luck everybody!

I agree. Ive heard of people near me finding a few where I don't have permission to look but thats it. The order is supposed to be browns and grays first then blondes. Ive found dog peckers then blondes. The blondes are small species that Im finding. This season is not a great first one for me so far. Ive found more then some but I wanted to find big Morels. At least a few big enough to stuff or fry. Good luck to you too buckeyebowman!

The hot days we've had sure put the hurt to the mushrooms around here. I usually find some huge Yellows, but this year I don't think I've found one over 5 inches tall. I wish I could trade this coming weeks forecast for the weather we had the past week I wish you guys luck. I will probably only go out one more time this year.

Re: Ohio Morel Season 2014 14 May 2014 12:08 #22223

OK, think I've figured how to post pics, so here we go! Well, still kind of screwed it up, but you get the idea!

Re: Ohio Morel Season 2014 16 May 2014 13:48 #22245

Wow! That thing's huge! Found one today that was golden yellow from top to bottom! Thought about picking it, but when I put my hand on it, it was so moist I decided to leave it to see what would happen. I think it's the freshest morel I've ever encountered. With the cold rain and cold temps we've been having, the next warm up could be like another Spring up here. I'm hoping we have another "pop" coming.

Yeah Im hoping for the same. Id like to see that gold one your letting grow. Take a nice pic of it and post it up i went out all day today and aside from mica caps and pheasant backs and the yellows I left grow dint see anything new fruiting. The monster yellow was under an apple tree. There was three of them. The other two were too rotten to save lets hope theirs still one more pop!

Re: Ohio Morel Season 2014 19 May 2014 04:36 #22258

OK, I have reason to believe that we are going to have another flush. Got an e-mail from a guy I know from the hunting club. He went out Saturday and found a pile! Literally, one side of a double stainless steel sink full to the top! And real nice sized ones too. Seems all that rain is really plumping them up. Can't go today, but I'll be out tomorrow. With sun and these temps, it could really be good. Hope so!
