TOPIC: Oklahoma Morel Season 2013

Oklahoma Morel Season 2013 29 Mar 2013 19:12 #19261

Well I am a bit confused by this Morel season... I think its just running really late but I found my first shrooms two weeks ago, and usually their buddy's are not that far behind... I guess it is just the hard freeze delaying it I hope I know we need rain, but I sure hope that some Morels will come out even without the aid of rain

Nate lets just hope its late and not a bust!
the late hard freeze killed about everything that was already up
we just didnt get the rain at the right time and 80 degrees today was a little too hot...i have still been watching a few grow but havent seen hardly any new pops
had a little rain yesterday lets hope for the best!

Hey all,

I made it in to OKC Friday afternoon. Hunted OKC spots and Norman spots with no luck. Today hunted Canadian south of Norman, Chickasaw Rec Area, Wachita river, Turner Falls area. Not a single Morel for me…

Hunted 12 hrs today, surprised I did not find any!

Further south tomorrow.

Good luck ShroomMates!

The results of my Easter hunt..(3-31-13)131 Shrooms making a pound and a half of dinner. Man it is tough hunting out there. Got these out of central OK. Most were fresh, but maybe a third were frost bitten and hanging in there except for the tip.

Happy Easter!! Maybe next weekend will be primetime!!

Re: Morel Season 2013 01 Apr 2013 02:34 #19360

Well guys, Mother Nature -1 Missouri ShroomMate - 0

She has won the battle but she will not win the war!

I went south of Ardmore, OK yesterday. Got down there right as the sun was coming up and hunted for about 6 more hours but got skunked again.

They got alot of rain and things should be really good by the weekend! Elm leaves were unfolding in Ardmore and elm seeds were visible in OKC.

I did however have an encounter with a pack of wild hogs! First time I had seen any. There were 10 in the first group and four smaller ones about 5 minutes later. Four of them were quite large! They were about 30' to my left and heading somewhere and they just wanted around me. They were running in single file so it was easy to avoid them but I would have felt more comfortable after that with a side arm!

I cut my losses and had Easter dinner with my dad in Norman and drove home whipped! That is what I get for not being in control of my Morel Mania!

Oh ya, sorry about naming location names in my previous post! That is my mulligan and I hear you only get 1 per year!

Good luck ShroomMates!

I'll disclose the location soon!

But Next week looks like I'll be Oklahoma bound. We would love to put faces with more hunters names.

I'm game to meet up for a bite to eat or cold one or two!

Hunt? or just hang Jeff,RJ and I will be down Tuesday.

And I love trout!

Been over some of Oklahoma the last 3 days. Great place to cruse arroud. Ended up in Salina tonght. Got a ways to go here. 1.5 to 2 weeks The only comment I have Oklahoma is that the price of Morels is going from $40# to well you guess. We will be seeing great reports from there. By the way found enought to last me a few days. Hopefully MIssouri will come on in the next week to 10 days and save me some miles.

OK, I can't stand it... I have to go back to OK. With the first KC finds now reported and rain and warmth on the way, next weekend will be on in KC.

Re: Morel Season 2013 05 Apr 2013 06:27 #19516

I seriously doubt that KC has actually found any. They are behind us and ours are NOT up yet. Heck they are barely finding them in the southern third of the state on OK. I don't know why people always claim to find them a week or two before they even start. They probably came from southern AR or OK

Re: Morel Season 2013 05 Apr 2013 06:35 #19517

ooga, I have to agree with ya on the KC find. Was surprised to see that post on the link provided in the (Ks) section here. Been out myself several times over the last week here in NEKs, and nothing yet. It's so dry up here and I think we've not had enough consistantly warm night time temps to do the trick yet. Still gonna go look this weekend.

Re: Morel Season 2013 05 Apr 2013 07:40 #19518

I have a real good friend that lives just outside KC near a little town called Wellsville. They never find the before the 15th of April and if they are like we are everything is running late this year. Good luck and good hunting. I think they should be going here this week end for sure by next week end.

Looking good down there you guys. How would you say this season is shaping up compared to others in the recent past? Is it winding down or just getting going?

Re: Morel Season 2013 07 Apr 2013 02:27 #19570

It is a really tough season to call, but I am fairly certain by the look of the woods and where I am finding them now, that it is just getting started! The weird thing is if I am right this will by far be my longest Morel season in Oklahoma ever. The first three weeks were horrible, but there were a few to be found if you covered lots of miles and got lucky.

Re: Morel Season 2013 08 Apr 2013 04:21 #19620

Well guys, my second OK trip went better than the first! I was pleased to be able to hook up with Nate for a short hunt Friday evening although the Morels weren't real cooperative. We found about 1 lb though. Thanks Nate!

Saturday morning I asked permission from a lady to hunt her river property and she let me... I found a couple lbs there and went back and shared them with her. She was very appreciative. Her husband was wheel chair bound and can't get out anymore.

Saturday night I had bad luck in Eastern OK so I headed back to South Central. I hit another couple lbs there and worked my way back north again to OKC.

I found some in each place I went on Sunday but they are just getting going. This next week after another round of rain and it will be crazy in OK!

I did find about 35 under a dead elm on the side of the highway with an East facing ditch in South Central OK. You know what that means!

Here is a pic of some of them. I had about 2.5 lbs that were not pictured here these are just the ones I took to share with my brother at work!

But, I saw where it may only drop below freezing for a couple hours and the more moisture in the shroom the longer it will take to frostbite or god forbid, freeze up... I would imagine the shrooms down there are pretty well moist at this point.

Lots of info on that subject (grays/yellows) in thread "grey morels"
It's on the Kansas message board, or you can peruse Recent Topics like I do to see the latest from all boards.

Re: Morel Season 2013 15 Apr 2013 01:34 #20010

Well didn't have as much time as I would have liked to hunt this weekend thanks to a bowling tourney, but we did manage to pull out about 20 lbs this weekend since Friday evening. I would say its prime time, but the grass is getting really tall in spots. Some of my spots have fresh and old shrooms, but one or two of them had only end of their life shrooms or shrooms that were just stems and mush. Too far gone. I think the season is definitely past its midpoint. I don't know how long she will last... Probably at least 1-2 weeks though with the forecast looking okay and with a few of the spots having lots of tiny fresh grays. My goal is to find a Morel in Oklahoma on May 1st that is still edible. I've never done that, but I am going to put in a long hunt or 2 in early May even if things are not going so well anymore.

Re: Morel Season 2013 15 Apr 2013 03:08 #20015

Hey all, Thanks to a friend giving me a tip and perseverance to not give up after almost two days of an Oklahoma beat down, I was gifted with my best hunt ever! 51# total for Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday morning! I found 36 lbs on Saturday picking from sun-up till sun-down! Simply incredible! In the picture is the remaining 30# as I had already dispersed 20# before arriving back in KC last night. I’ll try and post some better pics of the hunt later. #Thanks Duane!

Powerful storms in OK right now. Be safe and hunt blow downs in a few days.
Where the bumblebee hunts and the dogwood bloom, you're sure to find a morel mushroom.

Hey this is James from morels.com etc....I am thinking about heading down to OK from st. louis. Would anyone be kind enough to give up any general areas in northeast oklahoma? I was looking up Wildlife management areas, are these pretty reliable? Im desperate to find some numbers! Please help! thanks!

Re: Oklahoma Morel Season 2013 18 Apr 2013 20:10 #20203

I did OK around Tulsa on Sunday, so I talked to my estranged father in law and got access to his 75 acres just SW of Tulsa. Glad I did.
