It's bad luck to pick the first morel you find. Leave it there for me!
how long ya gonna leave em? should take some time photos so we can monitor theyre growth...ive never had the patience to do it, once i smell them fresh, they must be cooked!

Found 22 today in Oklahoma City area... Only looked for 2 hours but they were super hard to spot. Got lucky me and my son found those!! I found a big red false morel and when I hollered at him to keep his eyes peeled he tripped and almost ate the first morel of the season. LOL Tiny tiny guy.
lol yes... Maybe like 19... I did leave three incase I get back there and find the spot again... So I can see there progress.. Actually they were three separate trees that produced these... Probably bout 100 yards apart or a tad more.
Lows around 29 degrees f doesn't look good for Oklahoma morels. Cross your fingers. A few years back (in Kansas) we had perfect weather for morels. Found a few on the 5th or 6th of April. Next day, high of 30. It was over just like that.
Btw my big dumb fingers hit the wrong button and deleted this topic. I hope I restored this topic correctly. If not, KawRyan, would you be sure it's back up?
Where the bumblebee hunts and the dogwood bloom, you're sure to find a morel mushroom.
I'm really excited. This is going to be my first season ever. I have just recently found out that you can find morels here in OK. I love mushrooms in general and have never had the opportunity to try a morel yet, but have wanted to for a while now. I live in the Norman area. If anybody lives around here and wants some company when the go out hunting I'd really like the opportunity to learn what kinds of places to hunt in and what to look for.
its only three, i say leave them and it may give you insight to how your season is progressing

sorry the previous reply was to Okienoodler, and Abdullah, the red buds are one of the first trees to bloom in the spring

The season in Oklahoma was just getting going and now we're getting hit with cooler weather. The 60's doesn't bother me, but the forecast highs in the 40's this Thursday through Sunday really concerns me. I think it's looking until at least 10 to 14 days before things really start to pop.
So I don't have many spots near Ada.. If anyone wants to go hunting around Ada or anywhere really within a hour drive let me know.. I'm tired of driving so far to go hunting my honey holes.

not really the first, bradford pears are bloomin in full before the redbuds are here in oklahoma
Well he said one of the first... Not the first. Bradford pairs are an ornamental originally from china, so they always bloom early and usually a couple weeks before morels... So red buds are one of the first native trees to bloom along with elm. I imagine 100 years ago they didn't have many Bradford pears to look at in ok so that's probly where one of the reasons people started using red buds as an indicator. Plus they are easily identifiable In spring, even to someone not familiar with the outdoors. I mean come on it is our state tree... Old cercis canadensis and in my own experience they are the tree that most closely parallels the morel season... At least in ok.. An old tip passed down from my grandfather that came down from his
red bud blooms are edible too! really though, i watch the elms, cause if theyre not "blooming" then that means the tree isnt fully awake, and the mycelium decides to produce morels and how many depending on the status of the tree....or something like that!

its not the mycelium producing the (the fruiting body) the morels its the sclerotium thats why its such a mystery!
Well I put in some miles today. Went to my second best spot in Hughes/okfuskee co. This spot is usually one of my early ones... Usually pops at same time as my honey hole or a day or two after and I got skunked. I walked with my son and buddy for 4 hours. I know we were looking good because we were passing through the forest like a comb and we were spotting locust shells and acorns on the ground. I even got down to hands and knees near some of the trees that usually produce 50 or so in a 10 yard radius and stil found nothing.. Man I hope this means its just still too early and my honey hole is going to be ridiculous this year!
I don't mess with those married mushrooms, lol. great to see ya finding some!!!!!!

That's awesome Nate! Did you find these in Texas or in Oklahoma? If it's Oklahoma I'm shocked that this many are up. I may be hunting this weekend after all.
Thanks Pedro and those were all form Oklahoma Amani... OKC area to be more precise and I found more today! Left like atleast 300 small ones yesterday and left many small ones again today.. I think most spots are not ready. Out of my top 5 spots only one has shrooms and the other 4 have never left me empty so they must not be ready... I think sometimes there are anomaly's. These were mostly were I have found thousands before and were still only in the thickest of the woods, but also where there was a break in the canopy where it looks like it sometimes stands in water.
That's awesome Nate! I'm taking a day off work tomorrow and heading south to hunt. I know I may not find anything but I'm itching to get out. I think you're right on target about your spot being an anomaly. Every year it seems like someone hits a big flush quite a bit earlier than the rest. It's amazing how soil temperature and moisture can fluctuate in a small distance. The place I'm going tomorrow was really early last year, so I'm hoping to find something even though we haven't had the same early warm up like we did last year.
You guys are quite a bit ahead of us. Bradfords barely opening. I was in Stillwater and all the bradfords are full bloom. Seen a red bud there starting to turn red. Amazing how much difference in 80 miles. Are the red buds bloomed on the TX OK state line ?
i think OK just took the lead, interest wise, over any other state!

This will be my third year to hunt and I live 20 miles south of tulsa. Been getting the itch, have found a few the past two years but nothing great. The ones I have found have always been around elm trees. I've looked around cedars, oaks, cottonwods, etc. but nothing any suggestions. Just FYI my best find last year 25 yellows came out of a burned area that had burned three weeks prior to my find. As you all remember creek county suffered major wildfires last year, don't let that discourage you. Good Luck !
Oh ya can you all tell an ole country boy how to post pics on this site.
I drove a long way today and hunted my ass off and absolutely nothing. To add to my disappointment we didn't get near as much rain last night as was predicted. We need rain!
Isn't all of Oklahoma pretty much sandy? VC is also VERY clandestine so do go asking him questions
Most of it is sandy, but a lot is red clay as well......especially west of I-44. It just depends on what part of the state you're in. I hunted both soils today with no luck. I was thinking that sandy soil probably warms faster than the red dirt clay soil, but I really don't know.
Well it is obviously river bottoms. The sand, cotton wood stickss leaves and other obvious river bottom indicators are there i was just looking for a friendly morelhunters.com information exchange.
Good luck shroommates

beautiful camera work, man those are some great looking clusters, and i love the little guys in some of the shots, must have been exciting!

Has anyone ever done any good in oak stands, Iv only found a few morels in and oak stand by my home and its about 20 acres and right in the middle there was three old cedar trees and right underneath the cedars is where the morels were but other than that Iv never found any in just oak stands so if I see alot of oaks I dont usualy even hunt that spot I was wondering if oaks are worth checking out?
I've picked Morels near every type of tree imaginable. However, Oaks are not a favorite choice of timbers for me to hunt.
It never hurts to take a look...
Strange how after the first one of the season, all my dreams of naked women turn to dreams of MORELS!!
I typically avoid oak/beech stands in Ohio. If its a hardwood mix with some oak that "looks good" its worth a look. I also have not found any morels in old growth...but with so little of it left, that's not saying much.

i have never had much luck in the scrub oak forests so i dont spend much time in them anymore...but like J-bird says every tree imaginable(same here even in the middle of town under a holly bush!) so you just never know for sure
Well I have a bunch of spots to check and I doubt I will be able to hunt anywhere until next weekend.. Plus I was afraid the cold and wind may do in whatever I didn't take.

I remember JBIRD favorite tree is the snozberrie!

I asked a friend while hunting up north what was his favorite tree was, his reply, the one with the big red x on it. That area was cutting down all the ash trees and they had a big red x painted on them.

I do the same if it is public, well know, heavy traffic or i am not coming back. And the cold could have killed em. nice mess of shrooms. Looks like a batch of "popcorn" morels is in order.
Bread the whole little guy, pop in fryer till crisp...enjoy popcorn morels. Not my recipe but it is a good one for the little guys.
I am not a fan of the snozberries but went to school with a guy who was familiar with them. Has anyone had any luck with Truffula trees...or were they completely wiped out?
I think that they should burn after they log the forest, some crews rape the woods so bad a fire wouldn't make it look any worse! The multiflora, honeysuckle, and p.i. is gonna take over down the road anyway so you may as well draw out the fungus while you can get it.
with the lows in the teens and 20's the last 2 mornings everything that was up is probably toasted! i checked babies i had covered up well with 3 inches of leaves or grasses and at least 75% were toasted.... i salvaged what i could but its so sad all those little clusters never got to be fully mature
it started out to look like a great season and then wham...might be a bust only time will tell
