I have never ever ever had a problem with posion ivy or oak either for that matter......until last year and I got it crazy bad twice, required injections from DR and he said I will prolly be alergic to it from now on, not really looking foreword to that. This year if I get it ima get a shot early on.
I know Missouri Shroommate is allerigic, he wears vinly gloves at all times as well as a rain suit to cover him self. He is a shroom hunting son of a gun regardless but geez i think he gets hot and he still soldiers on. BTW
shroom mate where the hell are you. I hope your doing well, time to get ready sir.

Signs of spring....well we jsut got a slow rain here in KC area. I am hoping we can stay nice and wet between now and the time the shrooms start coming up. IMHO the rains we get now are as important if not more important than rains during the season. I know I have picked morels after 2-3 weeks of no rain when we had super wet early springs alnog with a good cold wet winter.
what do you experts think?
I just spotted a large group of LBM's wich is the first I have seen this year. I also sawa dafidill completly opened. Trees are budding as well as the Lilacs next door. Spring has sprung!
I thought you were up north number 2? I'm down around the Creeker and my lilacs haven't opened yet and my daffodils are just about to open. I've got squat growing on the forrest floor :'(
TAWM,your avatar pic reminded me of a Cottonwood I took last year...it didn't produce last year but I will check it out again this year!
"Then, taking along some of the fruit of the land, they brought it down to us and reported,'The land which the lord, our God,gives us is good.'"Deuteronomy 1:25
I've really got to learn my trees. I've been studying the elm, ash, and cotton wood bark online and would have sworn that was an elm or ash I thought I had found a cotton wood on a customers property and he said it was a shag hickory I don't know if I'll ever get it. My avatar produced around 50 two years ago and zero last year. I thought it was an elm but maybe its not.
I can't tell for sure without a closer shot, but yours does kinda look like an Elm...the bark is not quite as course, and ridges a little closer together, but sometimes it can be a challenge with no leaves to go by,or from a distance

I am officially applying for the position, excellent sales skills, (just have to believe in what I'm sellin). Jill of all trades, latent hippie tendencies with a strong distrust in any and all "authority figures" Can drive an 18 wheeler, train ANY dog, and am coming along nicely with my Armageddon shelter plans/grow-house in disguise. Just kidding, (not really...excess heat to be vented via hot tub)
My favorite time of year, 1st find in central IL 4/20/11! He doesn't look like much, which is why I left his better looking siblings to grow.
It's not the Ash I'm lookin' at Howiedoin it's the Redbud in full bloom behind it!! You should be knee deep in fungus by the looks of that purdy pink darlin'..
Strange how after the first one of the season, all my dreams of naked women turn to dreams of MORELS!!
Cammo, when did you spot that one? We got almost 3 weeks till were hooking up. Looks like we are going to be right on time.
I am planing on hitting a bottom spot this afternoon to see if I can spot one or 2 of those. and maybe some nettles.
"Then, taking along some of the fruit of the land, they brought it down to us and reported,'The land which the lord, our God,gives us is good.'"Deuteronomy 1:25
yep saw some of them couple days ago KCRM. They are purtty. And I think i am gunna look this week end in a spot where i saw those this week. it is warm around them.
Well Chef us northerners have to be patient and listen to ALL the reports down south while we are up here SUFFERING!

Prolly not. neighbors have eaen them for years. My moter in law did 2. We ate them a couple times years ago.But I onlyhave 1 kidney so I don'ttake any chances anymore, with much of anything.
I've heard about people eating them but in my opinion they are taking chances. You never now when you'll get one that is a little more potent than the rest.
If I don't find morels I'll just have to settle for other shrooms later. I'm not picky although I may rock in a corner for a few days if I don't get some morels.....soon. I think I just contradicted myself.
“And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.” Lincoln
And yes Im going back Saturday to pick the false morels after the become big boys. I like to call them omelet mushrooms. I know I know "DO NOT EAT THESE MUSHROOMS"
I have long thought when the ground is warm enough for snakes, the morels are not far behind and the "just right " micro climate could produce for you right now.
In KC area the turkeys are spreading their feathers, the dafidills are popping, the dutchmanes breechs, trillium, lilacs and I have heard tell of a crappie being caught up at smithville lake. And then Gary leasK is talking about a hard freeze next week.:dry
I say keep warming slowly but I am READY to say the least.
oh yea, found ramps today also, now to go down by riverthis week end and pick some nettles and make a potato and leek (rmp) soup for dinner sunday! I will post the recipe.
Does anybody know what the bottom mushroom is? It looks like it has a saddle shape. I found several of them under some conifers and they all have the similar saddle shape, not enclosed like the false morel.
The Gyromitra infula is a hooded variety
The Gyromitra brunnea is hooded as well, and common in the Mid-west
"Then, taking along some of the fruit of the land, they brought it down to us and reported,'The land which the lord, our God,gives us is good.'"Deuteronomy 1:25
The top one looks like the Thick-stemmed false morel Gyromitra korfii and the bottom is a Saddle false morel Gyromitra infula. I would do a spore print just to see.
I am pretty sure the bottom one is a Black Whip Snake. You can hear them at night and they sound like the crack of a whip. Sometimes you can hear screaming.........

I hear screaming and bull-whips crackin......how long....how long....

Tim that is the silliest thing I've ever heard. A screaming snake? Or is the screaming coming from you when you jerk your back out of whack realizing your getting ready to step on it?
I really like snakes except if I hear what sounds like rattling. Had a bull snake scare the heck out of me a few years back, vibrating his tail in some dry leaves. I've heard to many rattlers, and he sounded just like one right by my foot. Probably set some record in the standing broad jump. Just happened to be with Morel Master L. Paden that day, he got a good laugh out of it while my heart tried to recover. I just see this as normal March weather, 80's and 20's are all part of the game. A couple of more weeks usually makes a whale of a difference.
LOL I have had those bull snakes do the same thing and by god they sound just like a rattler. But yea you look around and see one of those dudes vibrating his tail in the leaves, I am always like yea well screw you to and then I laugh at myself.
I used to have a good spot in NE. Kansas I just finally quite on due to rattlers. Real rocky, and after seeing the first one for the day, it was hard to relax and enjoy knowing there was an entire den of them out. It was either go with snake gear or stay out. I hope the rattlers have enjoyed the morels.
a little northwest of Worthwine Island from the MO. side. It was private property and i have no idea who owned it then or now. In fact i would have to drive around awhile to even find it probably, its been that long. Back then you could just drive around the backroads and nobody cared where you hunted really. Now the farmers have pushed alot of the ditches in, in the hills, to where there is not much left of the timber. Those were the days of the big elm die off, easy pickins
Big elm die off, that musta been a few bumper years. i have heard stories of the 93 flood. I bet close to the same kinda deal. Neighbors picked about 100 #'s in one afternoon.
I scouted some woods thursday that had a huge number of elms in various stages of death. about 20 looked like they are gunna be motherlode trees. bark slipping just right and ground around looks awesome. one of those woods that has me chomping at the bit to get in
It is nice to find those spots. I think we will always have some elms. they keep reproducing, you just never see the giant monster trees anymore hardly. Funny you mention the area around, cause it does matter. Found a spot in C. Kansas once that was elm heaven. Looked perfect tree wise, all kinds of orange spotted ,slipping bark, small to medium size. The soil was more of a clay or something, and that spot only had one year that really produced. I could go a quarter mile away, different soil, and pick boxes full. The morel just did not fruit well in that spot.
Linn Creek, I got my first rattler in C. Wyoming around Pathfinder Reservoir. I guess considering all the time I have walked in the timber i am lucky not to have stomped on one. I know they don't think i am food, but a snake bite is a nasty thing. Lots of Copperheads around here to. At least we don't have Cottonmouths up here.
KCMO northland,
found opened may apples , what looked like oyster mushrooms and a turtle today, also some blooming lilcas next door to my house.
a good mess of morels were found in Jopln area yesterday also so I thin this week end for swm is going to be good.
Yes sir, south it is. I will be taking my frist official morl hunting trip of the year. MissouriShroomMate and I are going to head south! I think we can get in some. Joplin/SWMO area here we come!
we did a lot of grinning and very little picking, MissouriShroomMate picked 1 and so did I. SO that is about 300+ miles of driving for 2 mushrooms, lol I have done worse!

Just noticed today that the Bradford pear trees are just now starting to bloom. They're usually in full bloom just before the 'shrooms pop here. In fact, they tease me. Bradford pear trees have a natural shape which GREATLY resembles the shape of the morel.
Chef, at least you got to go. Far from a record in futility though. I have done worse also. At least you guys know where you were headed. Its the blind chases that have me talking to myself all the way back home. "I knew it was to early" over and over. Did you guys find any new locations of promise?
Ys we did a least give it a go. We did not hunt any unknown land, we went to locations that have produced for us inthe past. In retrospect ( omg second guessing ourselves already)we maybe should have gone a different direction based on reports after we got back.
"Then, taking along some of the fruit of the land, they brought it down to us and reported,'The land which the lord, our God,gives us is good.'"Deuteronomy 1:25
Yes I had ticks on me as well, 3 total. I did not spray the first set of woods we were in but I think they were springfield ticks, they suck.
I am sitting here already going crazy at work. I am heading out around 1:30Pm to scrounge up some more ticks. They will be local ticks tho.
I have been told by neighbor that they found reds last week north of KC about 50 miles, which is crazy early for there. I still think we kick off this week end in KC area. I almost gaurente that KC SHROOM Hunter will post this week end. he is almost alwasy the first in this area to find some. But i plan on beating him this year.
Omg the signs of spring are all around us. I think we will be going real good by next week end, the 15th it should be on like donky kong! Pay the friggin taxes and go pick some shrooms, only way I can be happy that day.
I have been at work sinc 9am and it is friggin killing me, if I could sneak out I would be heading over to the west/south west burning up some $3.60 a gallon gas.
Geez, I have been upgraded to Gold Picker. Chef, I have spent the last 30 years being a week early most of the time. I would drag my dad and brother hundreds of miles, hunt in the cold rain/snow. Usually for little payback. Go back a week later, sometimes, and fill up a box or two. Before these boards, it was all word of mouth. A morel addict always thinks its time to pick before it really is. But what the heck it beats watching TV. You going east on the river with the fellas this weekend? That's some real bottom timber over there. Nothing like it left around here anymore.
This is the best sign of spring I think there is around 9 babies just starting. I covered them with leaves and had to force myself out of the woods, it is almost on boys I can hardly stand it.

yes we are heading eat on Friday morning, plan on hunting my way ovr there. I got a picture from camo and thing look promising, he has been finding them since sunday:) Wife and I have drove over there the last 3-4 years, hunted with the group last year but we were early by a week, this week looks GOOD.
as far as chasing the morel to early I have done really well the last 3 years, this year I did make an ealy trip with ShroomMate but it was worth it, we split the gas. Still no shrooms but oh well.
Hellow peeps....it's a comin!!!! ?
