TOPIC: Black Morels

Black Morels 30 Mar 2010 04:53 #1292

Hey everyone, this is only my third year on the hunt and we were wanting to find some black morels this season. I'm told they pop a bit early and don't like as much brush as the yellows and greys. Can anyone give me some pointers on areas that would be good to search and/or when in the season to go?

I just wonder if I'm looking in the wrong areas because we have never found them. I'm in Liberty, just north of Kansas City and we usually try Smithville lake, Watkins Mill or some farms up near Holt.

Any info would be great.

Thanks!

Hi shana. I find black every year here in St. Charles in a few spots. Mostly flat land that is in a mossy decaying viney tree limb type of area completely shaded with a canopy of trees. I never find them on bluffs or higher up where I find the yellows, always lower areas. Sometimes at the base of bluffs where the land starts to level off.

May not have been much help, but I do find them every year here. The forecast calls for 50+ night time temps for the next 4 days. I'm stoked! I'll post pics of my first black find when it comes.

My experince is that black morels do grow in our area KC, however they are few and far between. I have only found 1 in this area in the past 14 years. Springfield we found them every year and yes they are eairlier.. The MDC web site has a small article on them , ( morels in general, where blacks are covered.

Thanks guys! I had a friend who found some last year and I'm gonna butter her up to show me her spot, maybe trade one of mine. I think I will wait until the rain, maybe go out Sunday and hit some spots. I will try some low laying areas and see if it pays off.

Getting antsy! Soils temps are up and that sun is HOT today but I know those lil buggers can't be rushed. Still makes me wanna go for a stroll in the woods.

I have always heard of black morels but never have seen one, I wish you the best of luck and don't look to hard around smithville lake those shrooms ain't no good better leave em be LOL

LOL! Don't worry, I have three kids so my shroom hunting won't be 24/7. I'm no threat to the pros!

But when I go I do pretty good. If you ever hear 'I'm on the crab!'(Deadliest Catch reference) in the woods, its me!

Hey Morelchef, black morels are a piece of cake to find. Just look for a couple tires in a ditch--that's how I found my patch. Tires in a ditch = prime black morel habitat.
There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me;
Sign was painted, it said private property;
But on the back side it didn't say nothing;
This land was made for you and me.
