I shall be the first to start a 2013 KC season thread.

Luckily, this year I have several spots to look. Some to the south, 130+ miles, and some to the north, 50+ miles, of Kansas City. I think they are 2 wks away here in KC, maybe less, not enough consistent warm temps. I'm looking down by Osceola this weekend, I'll let you know...

I am new to hunting here in Missouri, although thanks to my soon-to-be in-laws, I have some ground to cover this year!! <fingers crossed>

I am hoping the temps this week and after this rain will getting things motivating along, thinking this coming weekend should start seeing the babies.

However, this is so far early then what I am used too! Try trying to figure out Wisconsin's hunting season!!!

This extended winter is messing with the usual order of spring. Usually we have the magnolia trees in bloom, followed by the Bradford pear trees (which tease me, because they are shaped sort of like morel mushrooms) then the redbuds bloom. And THEN the morels pop. This year because of the late start I think the season will be a bit "compacted", for lack of a better word. The magnolias & forsythias bloomed just a couple days ago & the Bradfords are striking up. Heavy rain Tuesday night & Wednesday followed by cool temps. Sunny & 50 Saturday and sunnier & warmer Sunday. I'm thinking Sunday afternoon/Monday morning could be a great time to get my butt out there.

They should pop any time.

Re: Kansas City, MO - 2013 23 Apr 2013 02:07 #20436

Like I said on the other KC thread, they're finally starting to pop, but they are TINY! I wonder if they'll stay tiny because of the cold? We kind of were afraid we'd stomp on some, so we just left them to grow & will be going back later.

Found a few locally today. Left a bunch to hopefully grow. Some of them are almost white. Is that normal?

I saw a few that white a few years ago...strange,could be lack of any UV(no light what-so-ever since they came up).Very pretty though

Found my first of the season on Sunday in Eastern Jackson County. Only found about 5 total (all small) but I didn't think I'd find them again if I left them. Hoping for better results next weekend.

Went back today to check on the ones I left to get bigger. They didn't get much bigger if at all and started to dry out so I picked em. Only got about 30 for the year so far. UGH!

Thanks, was kind of thinking that or maybe a lack of minerals or something in the soil? I'm gonna eat them anyway.

I have one tree that every year I always find a couple of those albinos, it's weird because on that same tree I also find normal looking morels. I always wondered if maybe it was a different type of morel. I have found them on different sides of the tree and I have also found decent size ones not just small ones. What do some of the more experienced people think?

Skindog, sounds like multiple varieties. Cool to see that huh? I love it.
Where the bumblebee hunts and the dogwood bloom, you're sure to find a morel mushroom.

Yeah it is pretty cool to see they look like they would glow under a black light.
