TOPIC: Fall Morels

Fall Morels 04 Aug 2010 11:18 #5742

I saw this report several years back and have always wondered about fall morels down south:

The biggest news in mushroomdom comes from the internet mushroom magazine Mycoinfo www.mycoinfo.com: "November Morels in Texas (Mycoinfo-11/18/98). Although it is not exactly something you would expect to find elsewhere, for years there have been rumors that morels can be found in Texas during the Fall. This year, the proof is in. At a recent meeting of the Central Texas Mycological Society (CTMS), someone brought in a whole bag full of fresh Morchella esculenta found about thirty miles west of Austin (exact location not to be divulged at this time) during the second week of November. Naturally, CTMS has organized a foray to the spot this coming weekend."

The sequel to this article appeared two weeks later: "A Texas Morel Tall Tale (Mycoinfo-12/01/98) Members of the Central Texas Mycological Society recently spent a late November Sunday morning hunched over in the juniper scrub woods of the Texas hill country. Their purpose? Finding morels, and yes there were many to be found. About ten people showed up and anyone with a basket was able to fill it with reasonably fresh specimens of Morchella esculenta.. They were highly caespitose (growing in clumps with bases essentially fused together) in troops under juniper bushes and trees, on rocky, limestone-based soil. This is typical habitat for Texas. The exact location? We can tell you this much - it wasn't far from the Pedernales River about 30-50 miles West of Austin."

So my question to you. Is anyone heading to Texas for Thanksgiving?

I do remember seeing the article in mycoinfo before they took it down. Not sure if that helps.

i dont believe it however i would believe you if you actually found some. so i guess weirder things have happened so if they can find them at this time of year more power to them but i still think my freshy Springs taste better than Texas anytime of the year.
" We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things. "

I was just thinking about fall morels before I logged on tonight. There is a migrating season for morels in the spring and I think in the fall as well for the spores. I seen this info on another site for the seasons. How much of it is true I'm not sure. But with the weather in Wi come late Aug and early Sept what would stop the from growing? being that the temps, rain and humidity is about the same as May? What are your thoughts? We never seen them cause eberything is so grown in at the time and noone really looks? Hmm.....

The only difference is the winter freeze.

I have looked but I agree with Kc it seems we need the Winter to reset!
Tell me who's to say after all is done

I have looked in the fall as well for morels, thinking the same thing several years ago. and all I could come up with is the freeze just like KC said. I think I have read before that morels grow in every state in the US but not all over each state. Like they are found in FL but rarely and after very cold winters, same with GA and Ark. The cold is what does it IMHO.I have read about morels being found in the winter in MO, late Feb after it had been real cold and then got a slow spring like warming trend, true or not I don't know. I would not spend a lot of time looking.

Re:Fall Morels 18 Aug 2010 11:43 #5859

I tend to believe that you do need a hard freeze of the ground to reset them for the season. So to me it might be possible for fall morels in places that get an unusually early freeze in fall and then get warm spring-like conditions of a southern indian summer. I think this would make it very unlikely to find morels in the upper Midwest (MO included) in the fall. In TX conditions could warm up long enough to get them started but not here. I looked and the temperature was above average in Nov in 1998, but no sign of a freeze before then.

Morelchef, unless you have seen different, I believe that FL is the only state that there are NO reports, official or otherwise, of morel finds.
